A lighthearted TikTok video featuring Torgi Squire, a Black Scottish teacher joking about Glasgow’s unpredictable summer weather, has gone viral—sparking an unexpected wave of interest among Black American viewers. The clip has launched the trending hashtag #blackscottishtiktok, opening up a broader conversation around race, identity, and diasporic connection.

While the video itself is comedic, its impact has been far-reaching. Many Black Americans have expressed surprise, curiosity, and admiration at seeing Black people speak in Scottish accents or share their experiences growing up Black in Scotland. An identity which is often overlooked & underrepresented in mainstream narratives.
Comment sections have become spaces for dialogue about the Black diaspora, cultural similarities and differences. As well as shared experiences of common marginalization across continents.
Some viewers have even described the trend as ‘healing,’ highlighting how it bridges the cultural gap between Black Aboriginal communities in the U.S. and Europe, with mutual admiration exchanged between Black Americans and Black Scots.
